Time once again for a summary of the latest alternative medicine news.
Here are today’s stories…
Is Your Computer Frying Your Eyes?Computers add a lot to our lives. But they also can cause problems sometimes. You probably already know about the modern syndrome, “mouse wrist”. It’s when someone uses their mouse so much they get wrist or hand problems.
But there is another problem to be aware of, especially if you spend a good amount of time in front of the screen.
The problem happens with your eyes. Excessive computer use increases the chance of macular degeneration and other problems. These other problems all involve having less clear vision.
Fortunately, there is a solution. And it’s a simple one.
GreenMedInfo.com has the information. The quote from the study mentioned in the article gives you the gist of it:
“Visual function in healthy subjects who received the lutein supplement improved, especially in contrast sensitivity, suggesting that a higher intake of lutein may have beneficial effects on the visual performance.”
They also mention one other supplement that helps keep your eyes clear and happy. You can get the full story here.
101 Coconut Health BenefitsCoconut, especially coconut oil, has gotten a bad rap.Remember all the hoopla about saturated fat? The poster child of this was coconut oil.
But extra virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil has multiple health benefits. You can find other articles in Balance Point about how it helps Alzheimer’s and other problems.
The folks at Natural News have made a list of 101 ways coconut helps health. 7 of these are about coconut water. The rest are the healthy benefits of coconut oil.
This is a good list. It includes a wide variety of internal as well as external uses for the oil.
Thanks to Judy Persin for pointing this article out to me. The details are here on the Natural News website.
Can Antioxidants Stop Cancer? You have likely seen evidence that antioxidants are good for you.The list is long. Inflammation, oxidative stress, cell health, etc. all benefit from taking them.
Now there is a study showing that they can stop or at least slow cancer.
The proof comes from Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center. They found that antioxidants slow cancer. They do this by interfering with tumor growth.
And they act at the genetic level. This means they support the body’s ability to stop and even reverse tumor growth.
Here is a quote from the lead researcher…
“Antioxidants have been associated with cancer reducing effects—beta carotene, for example—but the mechanisms, the genetic evidence, has been lacking,” says lead researcher Michael P. Lisanti, M.D., Ph.D. “Now we have genetic proof that mitochondrial oxidative stress is important for driving tumor growth.”

Cholesterol Is Good For YouYes, the old demon is back. You know the one… cholesterol. But as long-time readers know, it is far from the demon you hear about. In fact, it’s good for you!
Not only is it NOT the life-ending, health-ruining danger you’ve heard, it actually will help you live longer. And not only longer, but happier and healthier.
Dr. Al Sears tells a great story. He talks about presenting information on his PACE exercise program to a bunch of doctors. They were shocked when he said, “Cholesterol is good for you.”
And you can imagine how they responded when he said, “I want you to have cholesterol. You need it. Life without cholesterol is miserable. You will be weak, slow, frail, and impotent.”
Dr. Sears, I couldn’t have said it better.
You can read his story and get the details here.
Hand Soap Can Cause Heart FailureRemember the old days when you’d use bar soap to wash your hands? (Yeah, I’m that old…)Then they came out with liquid hand soap. It was quicker and easier.
More recently, most of the liquid hand soap you find has antimicrobials in it. And the most common one is called triclosan.
Triclosan is actually a pesticide. It is added because it is supposed to kill germs.
But the AMA and other organizations don’t agree. They say it isn’t any more effective than just plain soap.
But that’s not the real problem with it. There are some serious health problems that go along with triclosan.
For example when mixed with chlorine (think “tap water”) it forms chloroform. That means the combination causes cancer. It also disrupts hormones.
But the latest problem is that it impairs heart function in living animals. Here’s what one of the study authors said about it:
“The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic,” said Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, professor of cardiovascular medicine at UC Davis and a study co-author. “Although triclosan is not regulated as a drug, this compound acts like a potent cardiac depressant in our models.”
So it looks like you’re better off with plain old soap. Skip the anti-microbials. You can get the details from the Natural Health 365 site here.
All the best to you for your health and happiness,
